Ingredients

  • 2 oz high-quality dark chocolate at least 70% cocoa, brands like Ghirardelli or Lindt work great
  • 1 cup whole milk or plant-based alternative, but dairy milk is best for a creamy texture
  • 1-2 tbsp sugar or sweetener of choice like honey, maple syrup, or stevia
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract optional, but adds depth
  • 1 shot espresso optional, but enhances the chocolate flavor
  • 1 pinch cinnamon optional, but a great flavor boost
  • Whipped cream or cocoa powder for topping optional, but totally worth it

Instructions

  • Melt the dark chocolate – Chop the dark chocolate into small pieces and melt it using a double boiler or microwave. Stir continuously so it doesn’t burn.
  • Heat the milk – In a saucepan, warm the milk over medium heat until it’s steaming but not boiling. You can use more or less milk, depending on how strong you want the chocolate flavor.
  • Combine the ingredients – Slowly whisk the melted chocolate into the warm milk until fully blended. Then, add sugar or any sweetener you prefer.
  • Optional add-ins – Want extra flavor? Add vanilla extract, a shot of espresso, or a pinch of cinnamon.
  • Serve – Pour it into your favorite mug and top it with whipped cream or a sprinkle of cocoa powder.
  • Pro Tip: If you want an iced version, let the drink cool down for about 5 minutes, then pour it over ice cubes and enjoy!

Notes

  • If you don’t have dark chocolate, you can use 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder + 1 tbsp butter or coconut oil for a similar taste.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. When ready to drink, just reheat on the stove on low heat while stirring.
  • Customize it however you like—add peppermint for a holiday twist, drizzle caramel for a sweet-salty version, or even spice it up with chili powder!
