If you are cutting down on sugar for any reason, it doesn’t mean that you have to cut your cravings, too, especially when it’s about hot chocolate. Instead, you should make a sugar free hot chocolate recipe made with cocoa powder.

It is thick, smooth, velvety, and that is made without sugar.

Being a sugar free diet drink, it won’t be bitter. It is just cozy and satisfying.

Besides this, you need only a few ingredients that probably would be in your kitchen, and no artificial stuff is needed.

Just a little cocoa powder, creamy milk, and sweetener that I would recommend.

In this post, I’m going to give you everything, like how you can customize it, make it vegan, keto-friendly, or make it more protein-packed.

Why Go Sugar-Free? (Without Sacrificing Flavor)

There are many reasons why you can skip sugar. Like, if you are managing blood sugar levels, you want to reduce carbs, you want to cut down calories to lose weight, etc.

I have also read that when we consume more sugar, we age faster.

However, I personally consume sugar, but not too much.

Most of the time, I try to have sugar alternatives, but I am also with artificial sugar in a small amount.

So if you are health-conscious like me, then you should go sugar-free. And you don’t have to sacrifice your test as we will use its alternative.

Ingredients for Sugar Free Hot Chocolate Drink

Ingredients for Sugar Free Hot Chocolate Drink

Here is the base ingredient list for one big mug of sugar-free hot chocolate (you can double or triple it, depending on how many people you’re cooking it):

    • 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder: You need to use high quality for a richer flavor. I recommend Ghirardelli, Navitas, or Valrhona.
    • 1 1⁄2 cups milk: Whole milk is perfect for richness, or you can use unsweetened almond oats. For dairy-free versions, go with soy milk for dairy-free or low-carb versions.
    • 1–2 tablespoons natural sweetener: Use monk fruit, stevia, erythritol, or allulose. You can also adjust based on your taste.
    • ¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract: It’s optional, but if you use it, it will add warmth and depth to your drink.
    • Pinch of sea salt: it will make the chocolate flavor pop.
    • Optional: splash of heavy cream: This is for creaminess (or you can use coconut cream if you want a dairy-free version)

That’s all you need for the regular version.

But if you want to try variations, below I will mention all that you can do for different flavors and vibes.

Best Sweetener Options (Taste Like Sugar, But Don’t Act Like It)

You can pick any of these ingredients based on what’s in your pantry or what diet you’re following:

    • Monk Fruit Sweetener: This is my personal favorite for this sugar free hot chocolate recipe made with cocoa powder. It tastes kinda, not exact, but still very close to sugar, and it has zero glycemic impact.
    • Stevia: You should use pure liquid drops or powdered versions. But remember that it can be a little bitter if you use too much. So use less in the beginning; add more as needed.
    • Allulose: It melts like real sugar and also gives a smooth texture. So, It’s a great option if you want to achieve café-style tests.
    • Erythritol: it’s quite popular in keto recipes. However, you should use the powdered form so it dissolves well.
    • Date syrup or maple extract: If you want to keep your hot chocolate more natural than fully sugar-free.

You can add any of these above-mentioned sweeteners. But make sure to apply one rule for all these sweeteners:

In the beginning, you should add less sweeteners. If you think you need it more, just add more.

Otherwise, if you add too much in the beginning and it gets sweeter, it will ruin everything unless you add all ingredients and increase the amount of hot chocolate sugar free drink.

How to Make Sugar-Free Hot Chocolate with Cocoa Powder

Sugar Free Hot Chocolate Recipe with Cocoa Powder

Here is the step-by-step guide on how I make this sugar-free hot chocolate with cocoa powder.

Step 1: Mix Cocoa and Sweetener

You wanna take a small saucepan. Then, add the following ingredients.

    • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
    • 1–2 tablespoons sweetener
    • Pinch of sea salt

Do not turn on the heat until you whisk them together.

This dry mix will prevent clumping later. You want it smooth before the milk goes in.

Step 2: Add a Splash of Milk to Form a Paste

Pour in 2 to 3 tablespoons of milk and start stirring.

It’ll start looking like a thick paste at first; this step will dissolve the cocoa and sweetener properly.

Once you have got a smooth base, you want to add in the rest of your milk slowly while whisking.

Step 3: Heat Gently Over Medium

Turn on the heat to medium-low and start heating the mixture.

But keep whisking as it will warm up; by doing so, you will prevent sticking or burning at the bottom.

And don’t boil it. You just want it steaming hot and fully combined, silky and rich.

Step 4: Add Vanilla and Optional Cream

Once it’s hot, you want to stir in ¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract and a little cream if you’re using it.

These ingredients will make your basic drink a café-style rich.

However, give it one final whisk and turn off the heat.

Step 5: Taste Test and Adjust

Now, give it a quick sip.

    • If you feel it’s bitter, you need to add ½ tsp more sweetener and stir.
    • Want it to be thicker? Stir in 1 more tablespoon of cream or coconut milk.
    • Want a mocha twist? You need to add ½ tsp of instant espresso powder.

Once it tastes perfect, it means the drink is ready to serve.

Step 6: Pour, Top & Sip

Finally, you can pour it into your favorite mug, top it with sugar-free whipped cream (if you want), or you can use dust cocoa powder or cinnamon.

Some toppings I recommend you try:

    • Sugar-free chocolate chips or shavings
    • Coconut cream swirls
    • A sprinkle of nutmeg
    • Crushed sugar-free peppermint candies (for the holiday version)

How to Make It Vegan, Keto, Paleo, or Dairy-Free

If you are a gym goer or health Conscious, you can customize this sugar-free hot chocolate recipe with cocoa powder. Based on your diet, here are a few options.

    For Vegan or Dairy-Free:

    • Use almond, oat, soy, or coconut milk
    • You can skip cream or use canned coconut cream
    • You want to make sure that your sweetener is plant-based (like stevia or monk fruit)

    For Keto or Low-Carb:

    • Use unsweetened almond milk or macadamia milk
    • Choose erythritol, monk fruit, or allulose
    • Consider adding 1 tablespoon MCT oil or grass-fed butter for fat (it’s optional)
    • Add a scoop of keto-friendly collagen or protein powder for more nutrition

    For Paleo:

    • Use coconut or almond milk
    • You can make your drink sweet with maple extract, raw honey (if not strict paleo), or date syrup
    • You should avoid dairy cream and instead use full-fat coconut cream

    Protein-Packed Sugar-Free Hot Chocolate Version

If you want to make it a meal or post-workout drink, here’s what you can add:

    • ½ scoop chocolate protein powder (whey, plant-based, or collagen; you can use any)
    • You should mix it in after heating the cocoa. Otherwise, the protein will clump.
    • Blend everything if needed for smoothness.
    • It’s optional, but you can add 1 tbsp peanut butter or almond butter for taste and fat.

This high-protein version is rich and filling, but still, it will keep the same indulgent vibe without any sugar crash.

Flavor Variations (Yes, Even Without Sugar)

The recipe that I have shared with you is delicious.

However, if you plan to make this sugar-free hot chocolate recipe with cocoa powder every day, then you shouldn’t make the same version everyday; here are a few variations you can try:

    1. Cinnamon-Spiced Hot Chocolate: You can add ½ teaspoon of cinnamon while heating. Optional dash of nutmeg or ginger; both are good.
    2. Mocha Sugar-Free Hot Chocolate: Add ½ teaspoon instant coffee or espresso powder. It tastes like homemade mocha.
    3. Peppermint Twist: You want to add 1 or 2 peppermint extract drops while stirring. And top your drink with crushed sugar-free mints.
    4. Choco-Chai Version: Add a pinch of cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon. It will make your drink like spiced cocoa.
    5. Coconut Chocolate Dream: Use coconut milk + coconut cream + sugar-free coconut syrup if you want a tropical vibe.

You can also just change the milk every time. For example, sometimes you can use almonds and sometimes oats, soy, cashew, or macadamia.

They all will create different textures and flavor depths.

Here are some important questions and their answers about sugar-free hot chocolate recipes with cocoa powder.

Can I use cocoa powder alone for sugar-free hot chocolate?

Absolutely, you can use Cocoa Powder as the base of this recipe.

Besides this, you can add low-carb sweeteners like Stevia. And that’s it. Your rich and healthy hot chocolate is ready.

What’s the best milk to use for sugar-free hot chocolate?
